A Case in the B2B Brand Building Process
This case study examines the brand-building strategy of the Al Jazeera Media Network. Launched in 1996, Al Jazeera transformed from a regional startup into a global news giant by positioning itself as an alternative to Western-dominated media.

Founded in 1996 with funding from the Emir of Qatar, Al Jazeera entered a media landscape dominated by state-controlled broadcasters and Western outlets, with the mission of airing “The Opinion and the Other Opinion”.

Al Jazeera competes with global giants such as the BBC and CNN, news wires such as Reuters and AP, and regional rivals such as Al Arabiya. Its brand faces allegations of political bias linked to its state funding, questions about financial sustainability, digital-native competition, the difficulty of consistent journalism at scale and audience fragmentation.
The brand was built as a counter-narrative: challenging the status quo, reversing the West-to-rest flow of information and reporting on the region from within – what the case calls the “Al Jazeera Effect”.
Five pillars carried the brand: investigative journalism such as Al Jazeera Investigates; diverse, localised perspectives; multilingual expansion, starting with Al Jazeera English in 2006; digital and omnichannel presence; and a distinctive visual identity on a par with major international broadcasters.
Al Jazeera built a unique and influential global position – a symbol of defiance and authenticity for supporters and of controversy for detractors. The case argues its future depends on investigative journalism, transparency about bias allegations and funding, and new technologies.
